Meet the Creator
Pamela E. Kuma
Founder & Creator, Heritage Trails Africa
“I didn't create Heritage Trails Africa because children need another website about Africa.
I created it because they deserve a different way to discover Africa.”
Too often, children encounter Africa through a narrow collection of stories—stories that can leave them knowing about Africa without ever feeling that they have been invited into it.
I wanted to change that.
I began imagining what it might feel like for a child to open a door into an African world.
To follow a path through a real place. To hear a language. To discover a person. To find a clue.To touch something and see what happens. To ask, “What is that?”And then follow that question somewhere new.
That is Heritage Trails Africa.
Why I Built HTA
I believe children should not only be told where they come from.
They should have the opportunity to explore it.
Africa is not one story.
It is thousands of peoples, places, languages, journeys, inventions, traditions, leaders, memories and ways of seeing the world.
Heritage Trails Africa exists to help children discover that richness with curiosity, joy and a sense of wonder—rather than reducing Africa to a single story.
The goal isn't simply to give children more facts.
It is to give them experiences they can understand, enjoy discovering, remember and retell.
Because the best learning doesn't end when the screen closes.
It follows the child out into the world.
What I Want Children to Experience
I want a child to be able to enter a Heritage Trail and think:
“I wonder what's next.”
Then:
Explore.Discover.Wonder.Connect.Remember.Tell someone else.
A child might follow a remembered journey, discover an old clue in the landscape, hear a Ghanaian language, meet the story of an important person, or notice an object that opens a door to something bigger.
The interaction matters. The story matters. The history matters.
But so does the feeling of being there.
For Parents, Educators & Partners
Heritage Trails Africa is being built with a simple belief:
Children learn differently when they are invited to discover rather than simply instructed.
HTA brings together history, culture, language, storytelling and interactive exploration in experiences designed for children—and built with care for the adults who guide their learning.
That means taking seriously:
- the difference between documented history and oral tradition
- cultural and community context
- responsible use of historical sources
- age-appropriate explanation
- accessibility and different ways of engaging
- the importance of curiosity rather than simply delivering information
We're building something that children can enjoy and that parents, educators, libraries, schools and organizations can feel good about sharing with them.
Why Me?
My professional life has been centered on people, possibility and opportunity.
I've spent years connecting people with opportunities, helping organizations find talent, building things from the ground up, and looking at what is often overlooked and asking:
“What could this become?”
Heritage Trails Africa grew from that same instinct.
I kept thinking about the richness of African histories and cultures—and about how differently children might encounter those stories if they were given the opportunity to explore rather than simply receive them.
So I decided to build it.
Not because I believe there is only one way to tell Africa's stories.
But because I believe there should be many more ways to discover them.
A Note from Pamela
I hope every child who enters Heritage Trails Africa leaves with something more than an answer.
A question.A memory.A sense of wonder. And perhaps a story of their own to tell.
Because history isn't only something we read about.
It is something we can explore, question, remember and carry forward.
